Built for drivers and riders in the US and UK: a large mph readout, top speed, average speed and trip distance in miles. Switch to km/h or knots with one tap whenever you need to.

How to Check Your Speed in MPH Right Now
-
1. Open the mph speedometer
It works in Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Edge on iPhone and Android. The unit is already set to MPH on this page.
-
2. Allow precise location
Choose Allow While Using (iPhone) or Allow (Android) and keep Precise Location switched on. Without precise location the speed jumps around or stays at zero.
-
3. Mount the phone and go
In a car, use a dashboard or windshield mount. On a bike, use a handlebar mount. Readings settle after 10–15 seconds of open sky.

What Is MPH and Where Is It Used?
Everywhere else, road signs and car dashboards use kilometers per hour. That is why this site lets you switch units: drive in the US in mph, then switch to km/h on a trip to Canada or Europe, or to knots on a boat.
| Speed in mph | Same speed in km/h | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| 3 mph | 4.8 km/h | Walking pace |
| 15 mph | 24.1 km/h | Steady city cycling |
| 25 mph | 40.2 km/h | Common US residential limit |
| 30 mph | 48.3 km/h | Default UK built-up area limit |
| 55 mph | 88.5 km/h | Common US two-lane highway limit |
| 70 mph | 112.7 km/h | UK motorway and many US interstates |

How Your Phone Measures Speed in MPH
The receiver tracks satellites from GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou. As you move, each satellite’s signal arrives at a slightly shifted frequency, and from those shifts the chip works out how fast and in which direction you are travelling. Because it measures movement over the ground, a GPS speedometer does not depend on tire size, wheel wear or gearing — the things that make a car’s dashboard reading drift.

Why Your Car Shows a Higher MPH Than This Speedometer
Bigger or smaller tires than the factory size, worn tread and low tire pressure change the reading further. If the gap is larger than about 5%, compare at a steady speed on a straight, open road and check your tire size.
Speed Stuck at 0 MPH? Quick Fixes
- iPhone (Safari): Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Safari Websites → While Using the App, with Precise Location on.
- Android (Chrome): tap the icon left of the address bar → Permissions → Location → Allow, and turn on Google Location Accuracy in system settings.
- Indoors or underground: GPS needs a view of the sky. Wait for a fix near a window or outdoors; tunnels and subways block the signal.
- Still shows km/h? Tap the MPH button under the gauge. Your choice is remembered on this device.
Frequently Asked Questions About the MPH Speedometer
How fast am I going in mph right now?
Tap Start at the top of this page and allow location access. Your current speed appears in mph on the gauge within a few seconds, along with your top speed and average speed for the trip.
Is this mph speedometer accurate?
Under open sky, phone GPS speed is usually within about 0.2–1 mph of your true speed at a steady pace. Accuracy drops in tunnels, under dense trees and between tall buildings.
How do I convert mph to km/h?
Multiply mph by 1.609344. For example, 60 mph × 1.609 ≈ 96.6 km/h. Or tap KM/H under the gauge to see the live reading in kilometers per hour.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the page has loaded. GPS speed comes from satellites, not mobile data. For instant access without a signal, install it as an app on your home screen.
Can I use it on a bike or while running?
Yes. It measures any movement. See the bike speedometer and running speed pages for tips on mounting and accuracy.
Is my location stored?
No. Speed is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to or saved on our servers.
